If you are committed to being a Biblical Christian there is no escaping the subject of God’s anger. Our church leaders are committed to teaching the ‘whole counsel of God’ (Acts 20:27), which means we try to present a balanced diet of all that God teaches us in the Bible. There are stories and topics which we would be more comfortable skipping over if we just wanted people to feel nice.

Paul tells Timothy that in the last days people will surround themselves with teachers who will only tell them what they want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3). Those who teach, however, are accountable to God. This is why we have continued preaching through the book of Revelation chapter by chapter even when the heading says, “The Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath” (Revelation 16 NIV).

If you have been uncomfortable working through these chapters it could be because you actually are a Biblical Christian. Listen to what the Lord says through the prophet Ezekiel:

"As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live."

Ezekiel 33:11

The Lord Himself is not comfortable with wrath, but it is a necessary measure in bringing His plan of love to completion. God is so averse to wrath that He would rather drink the cup Himself than pour it on us (Luke 22:42).

The Good News is that no one need experience the destructive anger of God because Jesus experienced it in our place. All those who turn from sin and trust in Jesus give God the joy of pouring out His love on them, not His wrath. This is what He really wants to do (1 Timothy 2:4).
