This morning in our pastor’s meeting David read what the Lord said to Solomon as he prepared to rule Israel as king, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” (2 Chron 1:7). The Lord was pleased when Solomon asked for wisdom in ruling His people. How would you feel if the Lord came to you with these words, and how would you answer?

Interestingly, in our family devotion tonight our bookmark was at the same story. After telling the story I asked our small children, “What would you ask the Lord for?” One answered, “To help me be good”. I think the Lord would be pleased with that answer too!

It’s wonderfully true that God promises to grant our heart’s desire. Psalm 37:4 says, "Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” On the other hand, James says that sometimes people don’t get what they ask for because their prayers are coming out of the wrong kind of desire (James 4.7).

Dallas Willard said, “The Lord wants to work on our wanter”. Solomon had his wanter in the right place. It’s interesting to note that just before the Lord asked him what he wanted, Solomon had been spending time in worship.

It’s good for me to remember that ‘delighting in the Lord’ comes before having my heart’s desire granted. When I find myself anxious to receive something from the Lord (which I often am), it’s good to take a deep breath and focus on God Himself, letting my heart enjoy His power and His love. As we approach Easter, let’s embrace the opportunity of having our hearts be humbled and thrilled at the Love and Power of God that we see in our Saviour, the Lord Jesus.

PRAYER & PRAISE

Psalms 46:10-11

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.

PRAYER

  • Father we look forward to the day when Your name will be honored among the Nations, indeed throughout the world.
  • You are the Lord of heaven’s armies, ever present with us and our fortress and we praise You
