In Exodus 33, Moses and the Lord engage in personal conversation. Moses prays:
Teach me your ways. (v13) Moses doesn’t just want problems solved or to know exactly what to do next. He actually desires to know God Himself, to know what He is like, how He operates and what He is doing. Moses’ heart appears to be one which desires deep relationship with the Lord. When we pray, do we not only ask for guidance but for wisdom and a deeper knowledge of God and His ways?
Unless you go with us. (v16) Moses can see that success in the journey out of Egypt and to the Promised Land is completely dependent on God being present with them. “Don’t send us any further if you aren’t with us!” is his cry in v15. Moses sees their desperate need for God, how they’re nothing without Him. When we pray, do we recognise our total dependance on the God of heaven?
Show me your glory. (v18) Moses still wants to see more of God even after all he has experienced and witnessed in his 80-odd years of life. He doesn’t only want to see the Promised Land, but to see God Himself. As we mature and age, does our hunger for God increase like Moses here? Do we desire for closer relationship with Him through Christ?
Be encouraged this week to seek the Lord like Moses here. Perhaps you’d like to pray, ‘Teach me your ways, be with me, and show me your glory’.
